Kotohiragu to Izutama Shrine 2023/4/17 19:49
Hopefully someone who has past experience can help me with this query.

During my visit to Shikoku, I am planning on spending some time in Kotohira and I will be visiting Kotohiragu and Izutama Shrine.

I have read some past travel blogs, and they all say that once you've visited Kotohiragu, you should continue walking on to Izutama Shrine.

I've looked at this route on Google Maps and I initially thought that they were close together. However, after looking on Google Maps for the directions, it says that the walk is 6km and will take 1 hour and 40 minutes. Is this correct?

Thank you in advance for your help.

I didn't know about Izutama ShrineišŽ°_ŽΠj, but I heard that some people go there (especially during Hatsumode).

Google Maps reviews say that it takes about 40 minutes on foot from Kotohiragu Shrine. It is said to be the inner shrine of Kotohiragu Shrine. I read a review that said it takes an hour, so it takes about 2 hours round trip.
There are 785 steps to Kotohiragu Shrine, and 1,368 steps to Okusha.

Even going up to Kotohiragu Shrine is quite hard (in my case, I rented a bicycle from Takamatsu, so it's a little more difficult than that), so if you're physically demanding, I don't think you need to go.
In the past, it was possible to climb up to Kotohiragu Shrine in a palanquin, but that is no longer the case.
It seems that you can also move by car if you are halfway.

We visited those places a few years ago. As we tried to save a wee bit of time and energy, we took a minivan from the Kotohira  station to  midway point of the hike.  We did not book the van prior to arrival, just spoke to a lady in the ticket office, and she called the van for us.  The end of our hike was Izutama Shrine. It took additional less than an hour, not 1 hour and 40 minutes as Google map indicates. Possibly  Google map  provides a  different route, instead of a shorter hiking track .

I was there Yesterday and thought it was very easy to reach from JR Kotohira Station, once you get to the shopping street lining the stairs up, all you do is basically follow the stairs up and up, you will reach the sacred area once you pass through the first big gate, I recommend getting some of the candy here on your way down, it's an excellent and rare little treasure and worth every penny. Continue on and you will reach the main shrine, then around the corner to the right of the stairs you will follow the rest of the way all the way up. You can't really get lost, the bit to reach izutama has more steep stairs going up the mountain in serpentines, but it's not so bad with moderate fitness, I doubt it's really 6km, it only took me around 90mins to go up very slowly and taking many pictures along the way and buying the beautiful o-mamori they sell here. Definitely buy the set of the golden talisman with the porcelain konpira-inu and also a tengu charm once you reach the top. Don't worry too much about it like I did, I took much less time than I had thought to get to the top, and getting down will be even faster. That is if you are not having health issues. With normal fitness it's really not an issue.
