Koyo in Dazaifu & Akizuki Castle 2023/11/19 07:43
Hi folks, in the next three days we will be in Kurume and Fukuoka and wondering if anyone has recently visited:
1. Dazaifu
2. Akizuki Castle Ruins
3. Raizan Sennyoji

Wefd like to know if the leaves are still mostly green or hv they turned yellow/red?

We have a rental car and these will be our last three days in Kyushu.

The autumn season is late this year but we are hopeful we can catch at least a glimpse somewhere in this area.

I was in both this year but not in fall. In any case, the places you mention are well known to the locals and it's easy to look them up online. Akizuki is supposed to peak around Nov. 21st, so your timing looks good. Places like Kamado Shrine in Dazaifu are supposed to peak around the 25th, but they've already started their evening light ups from the 18th.
Some fair warning about Raizan Sennyoji though - it is very beautiful, but wildly popular among the locals for autumn leaves, and the place has woefully inadequate parking - if you go there, I suggest you get there *way* before it opens - the roads turn into a huge parking lot of waiting cars when it's at its peak and you could just face a migraine.
There are other good places to see if you just don't want to deal with it. Yabakei is one popular place for the leaves, with large ravines and cliffs. Eishoji Temple in Kurume is also one other place for the autumn colors, but a couple others that may be better are Daikozenji in Kiyama (Saga), and Kiyomizu-dera in Miyama.

Thank you, Ken for those recommendations. We did visit Yabakei and Kiyomizu about ten days earlier, but they were just starting to change colour. We skipped Daikozenji due to time.

We have been back in NZ since last Friday. for what itfs worth these were the conditions last Mon & Tue, 20-21 Nov:

- Akizuki Castle was just okay, I think the colours were still mostly green, with some red and yellow. Parking was a bit tricky but we found it at someonefs home for \400.

- Dazaifufs Tenmangu was lovely but crowded. Some of the trees have started to peak. Should be good by now. Parking was even trickier, got it for \500 and the alleys were so narrow.

- Raizan Sennyoji was the highlight, it was really beautiful. Shld be fully peak or slightly off peak by now. Parking was easy, we got there early morning around 10am and first parking lot was already full. They ushered us to second parking lot. We had the most koyo there.

Ifm keeping other places you suggested for future references. Cheers!
