It is one of the better sights in the area, yet it is rather out there from the main sights near Nikko Station (Toshogu Shrine, etc). Seeing the falls doesn't take that long - but one issue is what else you are going to do after that. Going by a rental car would be a great way to get around, to see other sights like Lake Chuzenji, a nearby observation deck with a picturesque view, etc. Given the time and trouble to get out there, simply seeing the falls and going back to central Nikko would not be the best use of your time. When I went there, I wish I had even more time to see a number of other good places near the lake.
