October festivals

I'm planning to go to:

Kurama fire/Jidai Matsuri,
Takayama Matsuri
Nikko Toshogu Shrine Autumn Grand Festival

I'll be staying in happen from 5 to 27 off October and would really like to experience this piece of Japan culture.
I've never been to Japan and I don't know anything about it.
If they are going to be crowded,
if I will need to rent a room nearby the festivals.
If I need to go early to have a place with visitability,
if I have to prepare food,
if there is limited attendance.
If I have to buy a ticket
If I need to have transportation planned in advance
(And if you advise me any other festival during my stay)
