Using only limited express ticket

Hi, if I am just buying the limited express ticket in form of a paper ticket, without the base fare, because i want to pay the base fare using my ic card, is it enough to just touch the ic card reader and keep the limited express ticket in my pocket. Or do I have to put the limited express ticket through the ticket slot in addition to touching the ic card reader?

In case of limited express trains, it is not necessary to insert the limited express ticket into the ticket gate. Only in case of shinkansen.

Make sure the IC card coverage area spans your journey. If you are travelling between non-contiguous areas, an IC card will not work properly. Yes, it might have IC readers at each end, but that doesn't mean it is available as an IC card ride.
