Kurobe Gorge train 2011/9/8 00:04
I am thinking about taking the Kurobe Gorge Scenic train ride next month.
Can anyone please tell me how long each way it takes on the train (Kurobe Gorge) and also what is the best way to access the train station terminal of the Kurobe Gorge Railway from the JR Kurobe train station. (I will be coming from Takayama by early train.)

The train starts at Unazuki. You can look up train connections from Takayama to Unazuki on the following website:
http://www.hyperdia.com/

If you have a Japan Rail Pass, you can save a few yen by traveling via Uozu (enter it as an "pass station" in Hyperdia).

and also what is the best way to access the train station terminal of the Kurobe Gorge Railway from the JR Kurobe train station.

Why Kurobe Station? There is no need to travel via Kurobe Station if you want to see the Kurobe Gorge. If you want to travel by JR as much as possible, travel via Uozu Station. Otherwise, transfer to the Toyama Chiho Railway at Toyama Station.

Except for the useless access page, the official English website of the Kurobe Railway company is very good:

With a JR rail pass, you can travel to the JR station of Uozu ‹›’Γ and then walk across the tracks through an underground pedestrian passageway to Toyama Chiho Railway Shinuozu@V‹›’Γ station and continue the rail journey to Unazuki Onsen ‰F“ήŒŽ (900 yen). The second column in the following webpage is the train schedule from Shinuozu to Unazuki during weekdays:

and during public holidays:

Exiting from Unazuki Onsen rail station, turn left and walk 5 min to Unazuki Kurobe Kyokoku rail station for the Kurobe Gorge Railway. There are a few stops along the Kurobe Gorge but most will ride to the terminal station of Keyakidaira. Take in the scenery by walking down to the gorge and then back up and across the Okukane Bridge before taking the train back to Unazuki Onsen.

If you are going there next month, I hope it is late Oct. because autumn foliage season in Kurobe Gorge is said to be best from late Oct to early Nov. During that popular period it is best to reserve the Kurobe Gorge train. With simple English we booked ours over the phone.
