If I am at a station on the Kyoto subways lines and would like to get to a station on the maybe the JR Nara line, and the interchange may be Kyoto St so i hv to get off at Kyoto St and go out and buy a new ticket for the other JR line?
Never travelled between train lines before so i'm wondering?
I that correct?
Thank you.

You get off the subway, follow the signs that say "JR" and then leave the subway station by passing through the subway ticket gates.
Then you continue to follow the signs for "JR" until you get to the JR ticket gates, where you can buy a ticket for the JR ride. Then you pass the JR ticket gates and look for the Nara Line.
With a Icoca prepaid card you ca use both the Kyoto subway and JR.
