20 people from Chubu airport to Kyoto 2011/12/8 23:39
Hello,
We will arrive Chubu airport (NGO) in the morning and want to go to Kyoto immediately when through customs. Is a chartered bus an option? Or better by train? But what with 20 suitcases in the shinkansen from Nagoya to Kyoto?
Thanks for your help

I'm not familiar with the trip per se, but I reckon a charter bus would be the way to go.
Let's be honest:
You need to co-ordinate 20 people and luggage from
1. airport to JR Nagoya
2. buy the shinkansen tickets and try to get them all in the one carriage
3. Onto the Shinkansen, finding space for 20 suitcases..hard
4. Off the Shinkansen, complete with all the luggage
5.out of Kyoto station and to wherever it is you are staying

Surely one bus ride, taking the luggage, from Nagoya airport to your Kyoto accommodation will be well worth whatever it costs

Enjoy!

I also recommend a chartered bus.

It depends what your group's itinerary in Kyoto and if you need transport at destination.

More economical:
• CENTRAL JAPAN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT(NGO) Meitetsu Mu-SKY Ltd. Exp. 850
• To MEITETSUNAGOYA Departure track No.17 ] SHINKANSEN NOZOMI 377 to KYOTO
[ Arrival track No.13 ] NAGOYA 2,520
Both trains have ample luggage space.
JR pass not applicable

One way rental bus NGO -Kyoto: have you considered drop off charges?

It will be best to contact your local travel agency.
The fastest is if you use the public transport, Meitetsu & Shinkansen, ~6,800yen/p & 2 hrs. depending on if you use reserved seat LTD & Nozomi.
You can book a microbus w/ a driver or rent one, if you can drive w/the international driving permit. Both will take about 4 hrs.

The shinkansen ride from Nagoya to Kyoto by regular tickets costs at least 4930 yen one way.

What is the age range and coping capacity of your group, post long haul flight?
Surely the idea would be to start the trip as easily and stress free as possible.
Travel can't always be the cheapest or quickest option.

After U reach MEI-Eki or Nagoya Station of JR. Buy 4 sheets of the tickets called SEISHUN JUU HACHI KIPPU and ride JR trains via Gifu - Ogaki - Maibara .

U cannot use the Ltd Express but U can use SHIN-KAISOKU new-rapid KAISOKU rapid & OTHER local trains.

SEISHUN JUU HACHI KIPPU costs 12000yen for each sheets and only available during 20 Dec - 10 Jan.

All, thank you so much for your replies. I have an offer for bus transport Chubu airport to Granvia Hotel Kyoto at cost slightly lower than Meitetsu/Shinkansen train. But bus is said to be minimum a three hours ride. I would prefer the two trains. See no problem with luggage in Meitetsu train, but 20 suitcases in the nozomi? Is there really space in the shinkansen for that much luggage?
Thanks a lot

Klaus,

Unless you WANT to experience Japanese train, I still advise a chartered bus as it's comfortable and hassle-free.

Depending on the time/season you travel, most of time the train won't be full.
Take free seating cars so you can spread out throughout the cars and store large luggage here & there next to you. Carry-ons can go overhead like on a plane.
Nozomi runs non stop between Nagoya & Kyoto. So if you find a empty seat, nobody else will take it.
You might take less crowded Hikari or even local Kodama. Some Hikari's are non-stop & as fast as Nozomi.
All Nozomi/Hikari/Kodama are the same fare for free seating tickets. Nozomi reserved is a little more a few $ than Hikari/Kodama.

Klaus: have you factored in the time it will take to buy tickets, both at Chubu, AND Nagoya? AND the time to walk between stations, and onto platforms etc etc
You can't just go from Meitetsu to Shinkansen in a few minutes. Although close by, they are different buildings; then you have to buy all the tickets, and get to the Shinkansen platform, all with 20 people dragging luggage around.

Go with the bus!

If it is Year-End holiday season,
there must no space 4 ya luggages in Shinkansen.

Another vote for the bus, even if it takes an extra hour or two; people want to relax after a long flight, not worry about buying tickets and changing trains and storing luggage (especially during the crowded New Year's season).
