Japan Itinerary 2011/12/15 15:13
Dear all,

I am planning to go Japan (first time) for about 12-15 days in June in 2012. Would really appreciate if someone can shed some light on the nice and cheap places to stay and cool places to see see shop shop :)

Trip Objectives:
1) Experience budget travelling (Dont mind a night stay at a decent hotel)
2) Experience Japan Culture and Food
3) Nice sports apparels / t-shirt (authentic asics products, etc)
4) Sight-seeing

Plan
Day 1 to 4: Tokyo (focusing on Central and Western Tokyo - Fish Market, Meiji Palace, Shinjuku, Shibuya) - would want to focus on the urban (night) life of Tokyo

Planning to go Mt Fuji for sight-seeing.

Day 5 to 12 or 15 (depending on schedule)

Planning to go any of the 2 places: Hiroshima, Kyoto and Osaka (are they close by?)
Objective: Experience day trek / Natural hot spring (if any) and homestay - Main focus should be on the rural living

Would appreciate any kind soul to provide details and information on budget staying, rail transport, etc.

Thanks!!
Meng

First of all, late June is a bit bad month to come. It will start the rainy season (plum rain?? or just 'Tsu-yu') that usually starts mid June and last like 40 days) You better plan it as early as possible. Yet one of the best travel seasons (hot though) is right before entering the rainy season.

To make your hotel budget lowest, one option is a capsule hotel. You can just search 'capsule hotel in Tokyo' or 'kapuseru hoteru Tokyo'. It's a kind of dom staying and your bed room is like a coffin or something. Yet many local use it since you don't need advance reservation ahead of time. And the cost is somewhere around 4,000 yen.

If you mean you want stay a high class hotel(?), Imperial Hotel is recommended. Cost may be somewhere around 30,000 or more per night. You can check the rate in thier home page. But it is famous as the best service provided needless to mention how much Keanu Reeves loves that place..

Go to 'Kabuki-cho' in the night while you are in Tokyo. It never sleeps for much fun of eating, drinking, people watching and more.

If you have a chance to go to Yasukuni shirine in mid Tokyo, you will see something interesting. This place is the target of aggression by Chinese and Korean because those class A war criminals from WW II are enshrined. If you are sort of Chinese kin, it could be a good lesson to learn. (shame on me, I've never been there, so you tell me what.)

Anyway, because of the season, sighting of Mt Fuji in a distance is at a lower possibility. The climate moisture is aleaday high then, even if day is sunny, top of the mountain will be easily covered by upstream clouds before noon.

You can put Kyoto and Osaka in one travel package for three to four days but Hirosima is 3 hour bullet train ride away from there. You need additional 2 days including transportation back to Tokyo.

For your onesen experience, Ikaho, one of the famous in Kanto plain, can be your choice. I am not sure, but it is at kind of a mountains skirt site, so there should be some nature trecking course available nearby. But again, it could be rainy. You will fell the rural and traditional onsen spirits there.

Good luck

I'm Japanese and I love Japan so much.
But in June, it's the worst land in hell, truly. It's outrageous humid.
Please sift the information of June in Japan.

By the way, how about Nara?
Nara is the ancient metropolis with 1300 years' tradition, learned the ancient Chinese beauty, art and technology.

Thank you all so much for the reply.

Unfortunately June is the only month I will be available. Next best option is December - but then again I think it would be difficult to buy nice summer clothings / tee shirt during December.

TOo bad my children's holidays fall only on June and December!

So, it really does rain throughout June?

June is not as bad as some posters in this thread make it sound, but it does rain considerably more than in other months. Here are some basics:

I am afraid, with the exception of Mount Fuji, you have no rural areas included on your itinerary.

Would appreciate any kind soul to provide details and information on budget staying, rail transport, etc.
