7 days in Japan with 2 small children 2012/1/25 01:42
My husband and I have planed a trip to Japan beginning of April. With 2 little girls, 5 and 7 years old, we also plan to visit Disneyland. We will fly to Tokyo and would like to spend 7 days in Tokyo and in Kyoto. Do you have any suggestion? Hopefully we will see cherry blossom at that time of year.

Kiddyland toy shop in Harajuku
Hakuhinken toy shop in Shimbashi
or my kids favorite the Yodobashi Camera department store in Akihabara where the whole 5th(?) floor is toys.

We have not seen many children as tourists when in Japan, so cannot offer much advice, other than to avoid trains at rush hour, as it would be quite disconcerting for little ones in the crowds.
In Kyoto especially many Temples/Shrines etc have lots of stairs: it is a bit hilly. They also take a while to walk around: so kids could be bored.....
One fun thing we saw though was in the Imperial Palace gardens in Kyoto: there is a little (very shallow) stream, and many families were picnicking and the children were paddling up and down and having a ball. The gardens also had wonderful Cherry Blossoms, and is easy to get to by subway.
Be prepared that walking long distances, even in train/subway stations is a given and unavoidable.
Taxis could be a good option for tired bodies.
Have fun!

In Tokyo, Ueno Zoo is nice for kids.

In Kansai, you could go to Iga Ueno. The ninja museum is aimed at kids and there are demonstrations. Although ninja are often considered to be a 'boy' thing, many girls like it too and there is a castle just above that they may enjoy:

For cherry blossoms in Kyoto, I recommend Toji Temple, Heian Shrine, and Nijo Castle but there are so many places to choose from.

Thanks for all your advices. They are very useful. It will be a lot of walking for sure. Hopefully my kids can cope with it. Now we also plan to go to Disneyland for 2 days for the kids. My hubby now also wants to go to Mount Fuji. It seems like 7 days is not enough to do everything we want.

BTW, we plan to go to Tokyo first then go directly to Disneyland and spend 2 days there. After that we will go to Mount Fuji, Kyoto then back to Tokyo.

Have you considered just doing Tokyo this trip?

For two days at Disneyland will you do one at DisneySea? Ariel's Grotto at DisneySea is a little girl (and big girls) dream come true...

If you go to Ueno zoo there is Yamashiroya toy shop very close. As an adult I wouldn't like to do both Kyoto and Tokyo in just 7 days it would feel very rushed.

We've taken our children many times to Japan and had a great trip.
