Where to stay to in Tokyo? 2012/1/25 09:07
Hello,

Having never been to Tokyo, or indeed Japan, before I was wondering if someone could recommend some of the more iconic areas to stay in Tokyo? We'll be there on our way in to Japan for 2 nights and out for 3 nights. We're considering Shibuya, Ginza, Roppongi, etc.

Thank you.

Have you seen this page yet?
http://www.japan-guide.com/hotels/tokyo.html

It covers all areas pretty well.

We usually stay in Shinjuku, it makes a good central hub, easy to get to most other places around Tokyo, has many good restaurants/nightlife etc.

"Iconic" is probably more Shibuya or Ginza I guess.

Your budget might have an influence on where you prefer to stay. How many yen do you want to spend per night? For how many people?

Enjoy your trip!

We stayed at the Plaza Sunroute in Shinjuku, located 5 minutes from Shinjuku Station. Fabulous location, nice hotel, we would stay there again without hesitation. We booked a standard twin room as the rooms are larger with twin beds than a room with a queen, and the twin beds are more like a full size, much bigger than an American twin size bed. Wherever you stay, check room rates booking straight through the hotel versus Orbitz, etc. We got a much better deal going directly through the hotel website.

Whatever you do and despite the seemingly positive reviews DO NOT stay at the Park Hyatt, Shinjuku. This was the worst travel experience of our lives and would never go back!
They do not welcome foreign tourists but especially those with children. (our children are quiet and polite)
Paid ~USD$1000/night for arrogant, aloof staff - never again!!!

some ideas 2012/1/25 19:15
Ueno : is connected to Narita International Airport by cheaper Keisei Railway Company.

Shinjuku, Shibuya : are connected to the airport directly by JR Narita Airport Express(NEX) and fun even at night.

Roppongi, Ginza : are not directly connected to the airport by railway. Maybe Airport Limobus are more convenient.

Tokyo station, Shinagawa : are convenient when you are thinking to travel to Osaka/Kyoto because they are shinkansen train station.

I stayed at Washington Shinjuku Hotel and I know friends who stayed at Sanroute Plaza Shinjuku. Everyone agrees that Shinjuku is one of the most enjoyable ku of Tokyo particularly if you'll visit only Tokyo and Kanto region. The NEX make transportation from Narita Airport easy, the Suica&NEX greatly reduce the price of the ride and the subway and JR lines connect Shinjuku station with the most important points of interest (example: Shinjuku-Tokyo 13 min. by chuo line rapid, Shinjuku-Roppongi 9 min. by subway, Shinjuku-Asakusa 25 min.).
