Aki Basho 2019 - Day 15

In an exciting conclusion to the tournament, Sekiwake Trender came through when it mattered to beat Komusubi Norizo for the yusho (won on a tie-break by virtue of having the best score between him, Ozeki Yamashiro and Haidouzo) and achieve the eleven wins required for deserved ozeki promotion. Congratulations to him.

Ozeki Yamashiro achieved the impressive feat of 22 wins in two tournaments, but as he failed to win the tournament, and does not yet have a career Makuuchi yusho, promotion to the top rank will have to wait for the moment. A continuation of the current impressive form, however, will surely deliver dividends eventually. Ozeki Andonishiki sadly finished with a losing record and he will be kadoban in November, but a player of his talent is easily capable of the winning record he will require next time.

In Juryo long-time leader Kakushoyamaii took the prize with a strong 13-2 record. And Nekotaikai did indeed manage to meow herself to glory with a 12-3 tie-break victory in Makushita.

Many apologies for the lack of commentary in the final few days. It was not possible. Congratulations to all the winners and see you back here for the Kyushu tournament in November.

Aki Basho 2019 - Day 11

Sekiwake Trender won again and as sole leader is now within reach of both the yusho and ozeki promotion. Three wins will likely secure the former, and two the latter. But he has to face the Yokozuna tomorrow and promotion-chasing Ozeki Yamashiro in the following days. Ozeki Yamashiro achieved kachi-koshi today and he faces strong Komusubi Norizo tomorrow. Maegashira challengers Bolo, Bill and Sagi are also in the hunt one win off the pace.

In Juryo Unkonoyama won and joins Kakushoyamaii atop the leader board. Newcomer Oortael is now in pole position in the Makushita division.

Aki Basho 2019 - Day 10

Sekiwake Trender downed Ozeki Andonishiki and is the sole leader. He needs three more wins for ozeki promotion. Ozeki Yamashiro stopped his losing streak and got back on track, still in the yusho hunt at 7-3. He shares second place with a group of six Maegashira.

Kakushoyamaii won again and retains the sole Juryo lead. And Nekotaikai finally lost and fell into the chasing group that now numbers four.

Aki Basho 2019 - Day 9

Makuuchi now has two leaders in the form of Bill and Sekiwake Trender, who has put together a strong winning streak to give him a decent chance of ozeki promotion. He needs four wins out of six, but will be facing most of the sanyaku from now on starting with Ozeki Andonishiki tomorrow. Ozeki Yamashiro's tsuna-run fortunes have taken a downturn with two straight losses. At 6-3, he now needs to win five more and win the yusho.

Kakushoyamaii is the sole leader of Juryo with 8 wins. And Nekotaikai is now the only remaining unbeaten player. Can she meow herself to 15 wins?

Aki Basho 2019 - Day 7

Ozeki Yamashiro is going well on his tsuna run and is now five wins away from Yokozuna promotion, assuming he also wins the tournament. Not easy by any means. He shares the lead with Bill.

Kakushoyamaii is the sole unbeaten leader of the Juryo division. Gawasukotto and Nekotaikai lead Makushita.

Aki Basho 2019 - Day 5

Mananoyama and Bill are the only remaining unbeaten players in Makuuchi.

Ozeki Yamashiro is off to a fine 4-1 start in his quest to achieve the game's highest rank. Sekiwakes Andoreasu and Trender have 3-2 records and will need 8 more wins out of 10 to be promoted to ozeki.

Juryo and Makushita are led by three and four players with perfect records respectively.

Aki Basho 2019 - Day 2

Welcome all to the Aki basho. With many of the top wrestlers missing, injured or generally unreliable, uncertainty reigns in the field of sumo prediction.

Ozeki Yamashiro is on a tsuna run, and he can clinch promotion to the top rank with a yusho and at least 11 wins. He is off to a fine 2-0 start in his quest. Sekiwake Andoreasu and Sekiwake Trender both have shots at ozeki promotion. Again, the target is 11 wins. Both will need to improve as they currently stand at 1-1.
